Technological shifts and long run growth in a European regional perspective 1870-2000

This is mainly a discussion paper on some aspects of European growth from 1870 to the mid-1990s. This paper presents a perspective of modern economic growth as a historical process evolving in long cycles, derived from a structural analysis of growth. This perspective has certain implications for development not only over time but also in space, which are contrasted to some basic traits in two predominating theoretical approaches in economics. Furthermore, the different perspectives will be discussed in relation to phases of European growth since 1870. The discussion leads to a proposal of a periodisation of growth in line with the structural analysis.
